While we cannot imagine life without modern day inventions like Personal Computers, Cell Phones, Micro Wave Ovens, Television sets etc, yet if we are a bit cautious, we can help ease global warming to a considerable extent. The only thing we must remember is to switch off the electronic and electrical appliances when not in use. We all have lot of vampire appliances like Television Sets, Satellite TV receivers, VCRs, Computer Monitors, Air Conditioners with remote control, Cell Phone Chargers, Micro Wave ovens, personal computers and a host of appliances in our homes. They are necessary conveniences for the modern day life.
TELEVISION SETS
Let us take the example of TV. When we finish watching TV, we switch off power through the remote. But the TV goes into standby mode, preheating the Picture Tube, till you again switch on the TV. It is consuming power, even if you are not watching. The right thing do is to cut the power by switching off the power point for that appliance.
CELL PHONE CHARGERS
Like wise many of us recharge our Cell Phones, but forget to take out the charger from the power outlet. Most of these chargers too consume power, though no Cell Phone is connected to them. It means that you are wasting not only power but also reducing the life of the Cell Charger.
ELECTRIC GEYSERS
Many of us leave the geysers switched on whether we need hot water or not. This leads to wastage of power and increase in electricity bills.
PERSONAL COMPUTERS
There will be a billion computers across the globe by the end of this year and the figure is likely to touch 2 billion by 2015. Though the computers are becoming lean machines as far as power consumption is concerned, yet a billion computers consume approximately 20000 Mega Watts of power when in use simultaneously. The computers when not in use, but not switched off too consume considerable amount of power. UK alone loses about US217.3 million a year. UK has roughly 6% share in the global personal computers. If the UK averages are taken and applied to world wide computers, the wastage will be approximately US 3700 million or 3.7 billion dollars. So computers not switched off when not in use are like a double whammy causing energy wastages approximately to the tune of US 4 billion dollars, besides contributing to considerable levels in global warming. The direct wastages due to not switching off the PCs when not in use.
So every PC user need to be environmentally conscious of the social costs and climatic costs of keeping the Personal Computers switched on even when they are not in use.
Same is the case with the Electric Ovens, Air conditioners, computer monitors, VCRs, DVD players.
By switching off power to these appliances, you not only reduce your electricity bills but also helping the cause of preventing global warming.
When we add up all the wastages in electrical consumption, it runs into tens of billions of dollars.
We must remember that a unit of electricity saved is a unit of electricity produced.
We have a social responsibility to save power on appliances, when we are not using them.
